Education and learning are good things. I am always reading. Each morning I read for about an hour on a variety of subjects ranging from spirituality to astronomy to woodworking. However, there is something better than learning—unlearning.

It is strange and hard to believe that over the course of our lives we can “learn” or come to believe things that limit us and restrict us from discovering and living from life’s divine center. However, when we truly learn this lesson, we begin the process of letting go of the many lies we believe. Dear friend, start with lies you believe about yourself. They will be the most difficult to release, but as you do so more will be revealed, and you will be able to move forward gracefully in your life. Remember, learning is good, but so is unlearning.

In Love We Journey With You.

The Wild Geese

Horseback on Sunday morning,
harvest over, we taste persimmon
and wild grape, sharp sweet
of summer's end.  In time's maze
over the fall fields, we name names
that went west from here, names
that rest on graves.  We open
a persimmon seed to find the tree
that stands in promise,
pale, in the seed's marrow.
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes.  Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear,
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here.  And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye
clear.  What we need is here.

Whole Foods Update (to be located at Cedar Center)

Dear Emilie,

Hi, I am the Store Team Leader for the Pittsburgh Whole Foods Market and your inquiry was forwarded to me. Sadly the Cleveland store is still probably about a year and a half away. I’m afraid I don’t have the details, but there have been delays outside of Whole Foods Markets control. We are very anxious to get that store open as it is expected to be a beautiful store. Thank you for your inquiry.

PRESENT MOMENT LIVING: Tom Russell

* Making Connections, Entropy and The Fourth Way *

Spiritual growth is a matter of connecting your awareness with
the present moment, and from that connection increasingly
connecting to all the trueness that exists in the universe.
The more deeply you enter the present moment the more you see
Truth manifesting as you go through your day. Energizing
insights arise.

Steve Jobs of Apple Computer, in an interview in Wired
Magazine made a shrewd observation along these lines: "When
you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a
little guilty because they didn't really DO it, they just SAW
something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's
because they were able to connect experiences they've had and
synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do
that was that they've had more experience or they have thought
more about their experiences than other people."

For those sincerely seeking wisdom, it is essential to be
multi-dimensional. Take in new impressions. This helps with
making connections and recognizing truths you may otherwise
have missed. Perhaps you're not a scientist, but how about
reading a science magazine? Or a musical instrument - what a
marvelous thing to learn. Haven't read a good spy novel or
mystery story in years? Why not do something different and
pick one up. Poetry, lauded by so many but read by so few,
may have more to give than you thought.

Openness to new information and challenges outside your normal
routines, as well as continually probing new heights in your
area of expertise, are necessary counters to entropy. Entropy
is defined by Webster's as:

"The measure of the degree of disorder in a substance or
a system: in a closed system, entropy always increases
and available energy diminishes."

The answer is to have an open system -- a mind and heart
continually learning and making new connections! Entropy
is the force in this universe that seeks the comfortable groove,
the rut. We all must face it and transcend it. YOU can do so!

Personally, I have found that this tendency to settle down,
even in spiritual studies, is the primary enemy. I have
discovered that learning, openness and new experiences, on
all levels of life, increase flexibility and foster meaningful
spiritual connections. Also, the importance of quietness,
of daring to touch ever new depths in Silent Sessions,
is a crucial counter to entropy.

Entropy is relentless, but it is dull and mechanical. You
can be calm and intelligent in your response and supremely
successful. There is no law that says YOU have to settle
down. Individuals have the power to transcend entropy. If
enough INDIVIDUAL participants in any business organization
or wisdom group transcend entropy, the group improves. If
not, it decays. The key lies with the individual.

Vibrant Power

There's a new kind of power surging through the world today. Many of us are feeling it. It's pulsing in the air and throbbing through our veins. It's a connective, collaborative, vibrant power that's different from anything we've seen before.

It's not just authentic power, which is true and open, generous and integral. It's beyond that even. It's the kind of power that you have when you know you're fully connected to Life, running passion for Life through your cells and feeling the vibrancy of all that wants to stir in the world consciousness and in our living reality today! It's the kind of power that.....

... lights up the people around you and empowers them to be all they can be,
... stirs the soul and dances with potential,
... delights at seeing people live happy and well,
... finds new and innovative ways of working through challenges,
... loves to dive into the depth of possibility in every moment, situation and person.

Vibrant power sings! It isn't just my power or your power. It's OUR POWER. It's what's available to us on the consciousness airwaves and in the very air itself. It's this power that's surging to the fore in the world today, that's lifting people out of their complacency and into the adventuresome creation of new realities and global connectedness. It's the power that stewards our conscioUS evolution. From this place, we know what's right to do and we do that because it's got so much passion and perfection for us all.

It's time for vibrant power to replace dominating and controlling power. While it seems to me that women are leading the way in the discovery and use of this new power, it is definitely available to all. If you take a moment right now to connect into the collective consciousness of all the women, men and children around the world who are dancing with vibrant power, you'll discover a dynamic, creative force, a sourceful power which can and is changing our world.

Abundance of giving
+++++++++++++++++++

Think not of what you can get out of this moment. Focus
instead on what you can give from this moment.

Look at all you can give to yourself. Look at all you can
give to others.

There is far more value to be given than there is value to
be taken. Focus on what you can give, and you truly focus on
abundance.

Seek to give, and that abundance comes to life. Give to this
moment, give from this moment, and value that never existed
before, springs forth.

There is never more than a paltry, token amount available to
be taken, yet there is literally no limit to what can be
given. Give, and align yourself with value that has no end.

This moment is here, ready to be lived. Use it to give, and
it will overflow with real abundance.

Ralph Marston

The Enigma of Happiness

Ray Gardner walks with a limp.  Some shrapnel is left in his hip from the war, and another wound took out his left eye.  Ray works hard to feed his family, yet he remains, despite his apparent hardships a jolly man.

I met Ray one summer when I took a job mowing lawns and trimming trees.  A summer job for me.  A livelihood for Ray.  His lot in life seemed a bit sad to me, but surprisingly he was a bubbly, fun, and jubilant man.  Every day I’d say, “How ya’ doin’, Ray?” and he’d reply with a big smile, “Fine, thank the good Lord, and you?”

Our boss, Dave, the owner of the landscaping company was born into great wealth.  He was unhappy, and an alcoholic.  He’d have a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer under the dashboard of his truck when he picked us up in the morning, and it was gone by nightfall, whether we helped him drink it or not.

If being poor and disadvantaged doesn’t prevent you from being happy, and on the other hand, being rich and privileged doesn’t prevent you from being unhappy, what, then, is happiness really all about? How do we access it?

True Happiness is a Spiritual Pleasure

Every pleasure in life is a piece of Godliness that we can connect to. The awe of a sunset, a baby’s smile, a hitting a home run, and winning the lottery are all experiences that God created and have a special connection to the Infinite.  The more real the pleasure, the more of a connection to the Infinite.

Some pleasures bring a momentary happiness like an ice cream cone, or a new car.  This is only a temporary joy.  The Infinite Being created the physical universe as finite.  The physical world by nature is temporary, and pleasures that are tied to physicality are therefore limited.  Our joy from these pleasures is also temporary and limited.  In contrast, we experience joy when we do the right thing under difficult circumstances. That joy is much more meaningful, and longer lasting.  If you save someone from drowning, you might feel an inner joy from that event the rest of your life.  Physical pleasure gives temporary joy, spiritual pleasure gives longer lasting joy.

True Joy Comes from Within

To access more joy, we must understand that true joy comes from within.  When we have an experience that gives us true joy we aren’t really having an external experience, like we are when we eat a hamburger.  The external event is merely allowing us to get in touch with the joy that’s inside us.  That’s why it lasts much longer.  We all have tremendous joy imbedded in our soul.  The soul is a source of unbounded joy.  When we are able to focus correctly, we can unlock our hidden storehouse of happiness.

Changing Your Brain

What most of us do (who are Joy-challenged), is habitually ponder our difficulties, troubles, and problems.  When we mull over negativity, we increase our negative feelings.  This is a natural habit for many people.  The Torah says to avoid “turning after your heart”.  This means that we naturally follow our emotions rather than lead them.  We need to use our mind on purpose.  We need to control our thoughts and focus on our blessings.  By “thinking on purpose” we can direct our thoughts onto all the things that are going well and right; we can think about all the resources we possess to help us deal with our challenges.  This way, our brain is holding the reins, not our heart.  For some, their brain works like a T.V., whatever comes on has their attention.  We should strive to make our brain more like surfing the internet, where we are the ones who pick and choose what to think about.

The power of happiness is in our hands.

Joy is not just something we want; it is a catalyst for great spiritual accomplishments. One of the greatest kabbalists, the holy Ari, said that joy caused him to reach his high spiritual level.

Happiness is also a moral imperative.  We are transgressing when we are depressed, and we are fulfilling a commandment when we are happy.  It is one of the spiritual challenges of life.

Think of something to thank God for every day.  Write it down.  Try this for forty days and you’ll soon feel a subtle change taking place in your emotion of joy. And with that change you might just feel a tiny bit closer to God.

Finding You True Self

"The thing that prevents you from developing your spiritual faculties is
this very bad habit of always being in a hurry. It is true that rapidity,
activity and dynamism are very good qualities, which we need in order to
manage on the physical plane. But you must know when to stop so as to create
a more peaceful and harmonious inner rhythm, which will allow other forces,
other entities of a spiritual nature to get to work. You do not have to be
always busy and in a hurry, running left and right. Once in a while get into
the habit of taking a moment of rest, and tell yourself that, at least for a
few minutes, you can finally be face to face with the sun, with nature, with
luminous beings, with yourself, with eternity... When you feel the divine
energies awakening within you, you will know that you have found your true
self."

Strong Woman Versus A Woman of Strength:

A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape...but a womanof strength builds relationships to
keep her soul in shape.
A strong woman isn't afraid of anything.... but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear.
A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her.... but a woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone.
A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future... a woman of strength realizes life's mistakes can also be unexpected blessings and capitalizes on them.
A strong woman wears a look of confidence on her face... but a woman of strength wears grace.
A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey... but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong.
Pass this on to a GREAT WOMAN... I just did!

Pat highly recommends a book she is reading now, which she has found most meaningful for her. It is Sue Monk Kidd's Book, "The Dance of the Dissident Daughter."
Here is a review from Publishers Weekly:
The author's journey to capture her feminine soul and to live authentically from that soul makes a fascinating, well-researched and well-written story. Kidd's successful pilgrimage from her Southern Baptist roots and away from the patriarchal and fundamentalist Christian religious systems surrounding her is an account of anger turned to courage, creativity and love. A mid-career realization that she had lived without "real inner authority" and with "a fear of dissension, confrontation, backlash, a fear of not pleasing, not living up to sanctioned models of femininity" produced in Kidd the new mindset that made her journey possible. Additionally, her extensive knowledge of many subjects, including theology, mythology and the arts, made possible the copious references and cross-references that will prove invaluable for readers who wish to follow her in this same search. While Kidd cautions that each woman's path will be unique, there is no question but that many women will find in her book a mirror of their own present conditions and a hopeful call to self-discovery. Inspirational Bulletin: Setember 06, 2004

Hi Everyone,
Even us Spiritual Folks gotta eat, LOL!

My friend, Mary Ann, served these Scotch Eggs at a recent gathering.
Sharing with you:

Here's the recipe for Scotch Eggs.  I love it when people say "how'd you get the egg in there?"

Scotch Eggs
5-6 hard-boiled eggs, peeled
1# Bob Evans Sausage
l egg beaten with 1 Tbls. Water
Seasoned breadcrumbs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Divide raw sausage into five or six segments (depending if you use small or large eggs).  Flatten one sausage piece at a time, with your hands, pat-a-cake style, and then encase an egg in it.  Roll the sausage-covered egg into the egg wash and then roll in breadcrumbs.
Repeat with all eggs.  Put into a baking dish, preferably non-stick, and bake for 30 minutes, turning once during that time.  Cut warm or cool, as desired.  Serve with mustard.  Note:  The English make these, but deep fry them; I think there's enough fat in them already. They freeze well. Enjoy! - Mary Ann

A note of interest from my friend, Sally.

Last Monday I attempted to quote something that I had read that morning.   Upon re-reading it, I felt moved to quote  the article more correctly.   The author, Tara Brach is speaking of what she calls "radical acceptance".  She states,  "By accepting what is, we let go of the story of blame that either pushes away our partner or condemns our own feelings as bad or wrong.   I call this courageous kind of attention radical acceptance.  It is a way of regarding whatever is happening within us with the two wings of awareness: mindfulness and compassion.  With mindfulness, we see clearly what is going on inside us, and with compassion, we hold whatever we see with care.  By bringing radical acceptance to our INNER experience, we recognize and transform our own limiting stories and emotional reactions.  We are freed to respond to our partner with creativity, wisdom and kindness; we can choose love over being right or in control.  Even if only one partner meets conflict with less defensiveness and a more accepting presence, the relational dance begins to change."

MAKE ROOM
+++++++++++++++++++

How can your life be filled with joy if that joy has no room
to reside in you? How can your days be filled with happiness
if that happiness is squeezed out by other concerns?

Make room for joy and it will come. Make room for happiness
and it will be there.

Cast out the anger and spite. Let go of the worry and
anxiety. Let the envy and resentment dissolve into nothing.
Leave the dismay and discouragement behind.

Clean out the old, negative patterns of thought. Make room
for plenty of love, plenty of joy, happiness and
fulfillment.

Get rid of the mental junk you never really wanted, and
certainly do not need now. Make some room to truly live.

IONS MONTHLY INTENTION FOR A GLOBAL SHIFT IN CONSCIOUSNESS:

I picture the world as it is today, knowing that I am a part of this planet's evolutionary design. I choose to live to my fullest capacity in a spirit of openness, intellectual integrity, and freedom.

I am conscious that I have a role in the unfolding story of humanity. I am connected to the whole.

I am prepared to imagine that my intentions can find a deep resonance in the hearts and minds of others.

Together, we will stir the depths of human ingenuity, creativity, and collective healing. Together, we are part of an evolutionary pulse bringing into focus our collective responsibility for planet Earth and its diverse peoples.

My intention is that I may come to a place of wisdom, compassion, and an abiding exuberance for serving our common work and the greater good.

There is a zen saying that declares, “No snowflake ever falls in the wrong place.” Certainly this is true. In our way of life we have a phrase for this—divine order. These two words carry the idea that all things are the outworking of divine law. There are no accidents. This understanding calls us to action. First, we will not be victims. Secondly, we understand that we are called to place ourselves in accord or harmony with divine law. When we live from this divine center, we can be assured that our lives are the outworking of the best that can be.

POSITIVE SPIN
+++++++++++++++++++

Many limitations are limitations only because you see them as
such. By changing your thinking, you can change the reality
of your limitations.

Have things ever annoyed you to the point where you were
prevented from getting anything done? Have you ever been so
frustrated that you were unable to take action?

The tendency in such situations is to attack the sources of
those annoyances and frustrations. Yet there is often a much
more positive and effective way.

Instead of fighting against what annoys you, simply let go
of the annoyance. Rather than attacking what frustrates you,
just let the frustration drop away from you.

Instead of struggling against the obstacles, move positively
forward on your own terms. What you once may have viewed as
a rock-solid obstacle can become just another factor to be
considered.

To a large degree, you can decide what gets to you and what
doesn't, what stops you and what motivates you to move
forward. Put a positive spin on your thoughts, and things
that once would have stopped you, no longer will.

It may be in anticipation of taking Joy's Class but I am loving the beauty I see in poetry.

To look at any thing,
If you would know that thing,
You must look at it long:
To look at this green and say,
"I have seen spring in these
Woods," will not do - you must
Be the thing you see:
You must be the dark snakes of
Stems and ferny plumes of leaves,
You must enter in
To the small silences between
The leaves,
You must take your time
And touch the very peace
They issue from.

There is much of life that is this way. Life itself is unseen and yet its forms are everywhere. We are more content and less fearful when the unseen is known to be the truth. Let it be this way for us all.
